Demonstrator Sentenced to One Year for Manslaughter in Pro-Israel Activist's Death

A demonstrator who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with the death of a pro-Israel activist in California has been sentenced to one year in county jail.

Loay Abdel Fattah Alnaji, 53, was involved in an altercation in 2023 with Paul Kessler, 69. During the incident, Alnaji struck Kessler in the head with a megaphone. Kessler subsequently fell backward, hitting his head a second time, and later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

This tragic event unfolded amidst heightened tensions surrounding the Israel-Hamas conflict and growing concerns about antisemitism across the United States and globally. Alnaji initially faced a potential sentence of up to four years in prison while contesting the charges, but his expected confinement period was reduced following his guilty plea in May.

Sentencing Details and Prosecution's Response

Prosecutors involved in the case contended that the one-year sentence is insufficient, advocating for Alnaji's commitment to state prison and a longer period of incarceration.

"Mr. Kessler lost his life in a violent attack that took him from his family and his wife of 43 years," Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko stated. "Given the circumstances of this case and the death that resulted, we believe a state prison commitment was the appropriate and just sentence."

Victim's Family and Friend Express Grief, Frustration

Kessler's widow submitted a victim impact statement, conveying profound sorrow over the loss. "There are no words to describe the pain of losing a husband in such a sudden and violent way," she wrote.

Her statement, according to the district attorney's office, continued, "The grief is relentless. The silence in our house, the absence of his voice, his companionship, his love and the future we had planned together are losses I carry with me every day."

Jonathan Oswaks, a friend who attended the rally with Kessler, spoke to the Jewish Journal when news of Alnaji's anticipated sentence emerged, characterizing it as "deeply frustrating."

"I’m not a lawyer, but the way this was handled raises serious questions for me. It sends a troubling message about accountability," Oswaks told the publication.

Oswaks recounted details from the event, noting that pro-Palestinian protesters significantly outnumbered those supporting Israel that day. He described how, after he and Kessler had separated, individuals began approaching him, standing mere inches from his face, shouting into his ear, and using a megaphone.

"When I tell you I had never experienced that level of hate in my life, I hadn’t," Oswaks stated. "I told them to get out of my space. They backed off briefly, then started again. I made it clear they needed to stay away, and eventually they did."
