Bill Maher Praises World Cup Visitors for Renewing American Appreciation
Comedian and talk show host Bill Maher highlighted how international soccer fans visiting the U.S. for the World Cup are reminding Americans of their nation's positive attributes.

As the group stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw to a close, many international soccer teams and their supporters are concluding their journeys in the United States. Despite their departure, the enthusiasm and enjoyment expressed by visiting fans throughout the tournament have been widely noted.
From individuals embarking on extensive road trips across the country to large groups of supporters from nations like Scotland immersing themselves in local culture along the Eastern Seaboard, the experiences of fans from around the globe have been a prominent feature of this year's event.
While some domestic commentators have voiced skepticism about foreign visitors' overwhelmingly positive remarks regarding America, an unexpected voice has championed this perspective: liberal talk show host and comedian Bill Maher. He views the World Cup as a significant success for the United States' international and domestic image.
Maher's Perspective on National Pride
During a segment on his program, "Real Time," Maher dedicated time to acknowledge the contributions of the international fans who helped make the tournament memorable beyond the matches themselves.
"I am loving that the World Cup has brought to our shores all of these people that are doing Americans the service of reminding us, just when we needed it, on our big (250th) birthday, that actually, this place is kind of awesome," Maher stated, to a reception of cheers and applause.
Maher incorporated his characteristic dry humor, quipping about the low scoring in some matches by comparing it to a "Star Trek convention." However, his overall sentiment was one of profound appreciation for the tournament's broader impact.
He also tempered his praise with a pragmatic acknowledgment that while the country faces challenges, perfection is an unattainable ideal.
"The name of our country is 'America,' not 'Utopia'," Maher remarked. "We can't be more perfect than what's in your mind, we can only be more perfect than Belgium."
International Admiration for American Life
Observations from tourists across various social media platforms throughout the World Cup appeared to support Maher's viewpoint, showcasing widespread admiration for aspects of American life often taken for granted by its residents.
"Social media, flooded with videos of slack-jawed soccer tourists wandering around America, positively gushing about everything we take for granted, reminding us what America looks like from the outside," Maher explained. "Just regular people looking around and saying, 'Wow! These people live like rock stars.'"
Maher's positive reflections on his home country, particularly coming from a commentator often critical of national shortcomings, highlight a contrast with some domestic narratives that consistently emphasize perceived flaws. Instead of embracing the idea that America possesses admirable qualities, some public discussions tend to immediately pivot to identifying national imperfections.
Reflecting on American Innovation and Character
Maher concluded his monologue with a powerful reflection on what he perceives as fundamental American strengths.
"Maybe it's a coincidence, but I think it's something in the American system and character that we have the highest number of Nobel Prize winners, and invented the light bulb, the telephone, the smartphone, the airplane, personal computers, and the party-sized bag of Xtra Flamin' Hot Cheetos," he noted.
