Bills Cornerback Dismisses Patriots Rookie's Heroic Catch: "Probably Won't Hear From Him Again"

A stunning one-handed touchdown by Efton Chism III helped the New England Patriots secure a crucial victory against the Buffalo Bills, sparking a dismissive reaction from Bills cornerback C.J. Gardner-Johnson.

The New England Patriots secured a memorable 29-26 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, a game highlighted by an extraordinary one-handed touchdown reception from rookie Efton Chism III. This standout play underscored the unpredictable nature and excitement of professional football.

However, Bills cornerback C.J. Gardner-Johnson offered a notably critical assessment following the loss, particularly when asked about Chism’s remarkable catch that helped put the Patriots back on track against their AFC East rivals.

While Chism recorded only two receptions from quarterback Drake Maye during the game, his 19-yard touchdown was a spectacular sight. He skillfully snatched the ball out of the air with one hand in the end zone, despite a defender closely covering him, to secure the go-ahead score. Although not the ultimate game-winner, an interception by the Patriots against Bills star quarterback Josh Allen later sealed the victory, handing Buffalo its first defeat of the season.

Gardner-Johnson's Post-Game Remarks

When questioned about the play after the contest, Gardner-Johnson conveyed a distinct lack of admiration for Chism’s performance on his team’s home field. He went further, seemingly belittling the second-year professional's efforts.

"Probably won’t hear from him again, respectfully,’ Gardner-Johnson stated. ‘I say that with a lot of confidence."

Gardner-Johnson also referred to Chism as an “elevated guy,” implying he had been called up from the practice squad for Week 4. It is worth noting that Chism has been a member of the Patriots’ 53-man roster since the commencement of the regular season schedule.

‘They won the game, whatever,’ Gardner-Johnson added. ‘They didn’t do s--t better than us. We gotta play better."

While post-game frustration is understandable, some observers found the veteran defensive back's comments, which diminished a player’s highlight and suggested it would be the peak of his career, to be less than sportsmanlike.

Chism's Perspective and Team Performance

For his part, Chism appeared unconcerned by any post-game critiques. His focus remained on contributing to the Patriots' 2-2 record against a formidable divisional opponent.

"When I am out there, and the ball’s in the air, I kind of black out," he candidly expressed, according to reports. "I am kind of in that little flow state. I saw it in the air, Drake gave me that opportunity, and I just … you gotta take advantage of those opportunities, you never know when they’re gonna come."

Beyond Chism’s heroics, Romeo Doubs delivered a breakout performance in his inaugural season with the Patriots, catching two touchdowns on six receptions for 58 yards. Quarterback Drake Maye also found his rhythm, completing 22 of 37 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns, though he did throw another interception, an area he will aim to improve upon in future games.
