Investigation Underway After Disturbing Discovery
Chicago law enforcement and health officials are currently investigating a funeral home on the city's South Side where more than 50 human remains were found improperly stored and in advanced stages of decomposition. The alarming discovery occurred on Thursday, following months of complaints from local residents regarding a pervasive foul odor emanating from the premises.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that state and local authorities alerted them to the situation at the South Chicago Chapel. Upon arrival, investigators and forensic pathologists encountered bodies in various states of decay. The medical examiner's office released a statement indicating that staff are "assessing the conditions of the remains, searching for documentation regarding identification of the decedents as well as death certificates." They cautioned that this thorough process could span "several days to ensure proper disposition."
While no arrests have been made and no charges have been filed at this time, Chicago police detectives have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the discovery.
State Regulators Cite 'Deplorable Conditions'
In response to the egregious findings, state officials promptly suspended the license of one of the funeral home's directors. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation alleged that numerous bodies were kept in an unrefrigerated area under "deplorable conditions."
The department's statement detailed the unacceptable environment, noting the presence of rodent and maggot infestations. It further explained that the absence of proper refrigeration had accelerated the decomposition of the bodies. The temporary suspension of funeral director Johanna Morgan's license was enacted on Wednesday, the day before the public discovery.
The Department of Financial and Professional Regulation justified the suspension by stating that Morgan's continued practice posed "a danger to the public safety, interest and welfare." The agency explicitly accused Morgan of "allowing multiple decedents to be kept in an unrefrigerated area with deplorable conditions, including rodent infestation, causing decomposition and maggot infestation of the bodies."
Directors Faced Prior Sanctions
State business records indicate that Johanna Morgan incorporated South Chicago Chapel Inc. in 2022. The funeral home is reportedly operated by a couple who previously managed a crematory that was also shut down by authorities due to the mishandling of human remains.
Clark Morgan, identified in business records as the president of the funeral home and described by state officials as Johanna Morgan's husband, also has a history of regulatory issues. His funeral director's license was revoked earlier in 2024 for practicing with an expired license and engaging in "unprofessional conduct."
Families Seek Answers Amidst Grief
The unsettling revelation has deeply affected families who entrusted their loved ones to the South Chicago Chapel. Latasha Johnson, 55, shared that her mother's funeral service took place at the facility on Thursday, just hours before investigators arrived and made the disturbing discovery.
Johnson informed The Associated Press that officials subsequently notified her that her mother's body would require an autopsy and that she would need to identify the remains in the coming days. Expressing her profound distress, Johnson stated, "I'm discombobulated. My heart is broken."
