Two Killed, Dozens Injured in Mass Shooting at Georgia Block Party

A community block party in South Georgia became the scene of a tragic mass shooting early Sunday, resulting in two fatalities and dozens of injuries, according to local officials.

Over 1,000 individuals were present when more than 50 shots were discharged across at least two locations, approximately one block apart, in Vienna, Georgia. Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy reported on the incident.

Deputies were actively patrolling the neighborhood block party around 1:25 a.m. when initial gunfire erupted on the 900 block of Pine Street, as detailed in a statement from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). The Dooly County Sheriff's Office had requested assistance from the GBI to manage the unfolding crisis.

Two individuals were declared deceased at the site due to gunshot wounds. Among the 35 injured victims, most sustained gunshot wounds, while others suffered injuries from being struck by vehicles or from other trauma incurred as people frantically fled the area. All 35 injured victims were transported to various hospitals for medical attention.

Deadly Night Unfolds in Vienna

Sheriff Peavy described a chaotic scene where people were "going every direction." He noted that even as law enforcement officers were present, additional gunfire erupted about a block away from the initial site.

“We don’t know if it’s coming at us or someone else,” Peavy stated during a press conference on Sunday. “You just have to keep doing what you’re doing and hope you don’t get hit by gunfire.”

The GBI confirmed that the ages of the injured victims span from 14 to 51, with their conditions ranging from stable to critical.

The two victims who died in the shooting were identified as Jaquevion Jackson, 21, of Cordele, and Macaleb Jackson, 23, from Hawkinsville, according to the investigating agency.

Chaos Amidst Homecoming Festivities

The incident coincided with homecoming weekend for Dooly County High School. Sherrod Willaford, the superintendent of the Dooly County School System, clarified that the shooting did not occur at a school-sponsored gathering.

“We recognize that its impact may reach many of our students, families, and staff,” Willaford said in a statement.

Despite the tragic event, schools are scheduled to open on Monday with enhanced safety measures in place.

Vienna Mayor Eddie Daniels indicated that the city had not issued any permit for the block party and was unsure if it was specifically a homecoming celebration.

Ongoing Investigation and Community Impact

As of now, authorities have not made any arrests, identified a potential motive, or determined the number of individuals involved in the shooting.

“Please turn yourself in, because we're doing everything we can to find out who you are,” Sheriff Peavy urged any suspects.

The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

Vienna is situated approximately 130 miles south of Atlanta and about 50 miles south of Macon via the Interstate 75 corridor. This event follows another recent shooting in Macon last week, where 12 teenagers sustained gunshot wounds during a confrontation at a birthday party in a city park.
