Georgia Student Miraculously Survives Eight-Story Apartment Fall
A college resident at an Athens apartment complex sustained serious injuries but lived after plummeting from an eighth-floor window, with a metal bench reportedly breaking her descent.
U.S.·

Kristen Sargent, a college student residing at the Rambler Athens apartment complex on West Broad Street, experienced a harrowing fall from an eighth-floor window Saturday evening. The incident, which occurred around 7:37 p.m., saw Sargent plummet several stories but miraculously survive, with authorities suggesting a metal bench may have played a crucial role in breaking her fall.
Details of the Incident
According to statements provided to law enforcement by witnesses, Sargent was reportedly dancing on either a couch or an air mattress positioned near an open window when she apparently fell through the screen. Her descent concluded in a courtyard area on the building's second floor, adjacent to a pool.
Investigators at the scene discovered evidence indicating Sargent had collided with a metal bench during her fall. A police officer noted the presence of blood on the bench's cushion and observed that one of its armrests had broken off, suggesting a significant impact.
Emergency Response and Investigation
Audio recordings from the 911 emergency line captured the frantic moments following the incident. A caller, identifying themselves as a friend, urgently informed dispatchers about the situation.
"We’re on the eighth floor. My friend just fell out of the window," the caller stated. "She's on the ground. She fell out of the window. We were dancing, and she just fell out of the window."
When asked by the dispatcher if Sargent was moving, the caller responded with distress: "Is she moving? Is she moving? No, she's not." The caller later conveyed that while they could see Sargent below, they were unable to determine if her eyes were open, reiterating, "No, I don't know. I'm looking down at her on the floor. She's not moving."
Emergency medical personnel swiftly transported Sargent to a local hospital for treatment. Police investigators subsequently interviewed her and other witnesses as forensic teams processed the scene, according to official reports. The police report confirmed Sargent was a resident of the apartment from which she fell.
Authorities have not yet commented on the specific design of the window or any safety measures that may or may not have been in place at the time of the incident. The Rambler Athens apartment complex previously issued a statement indicating it was reviewing the circumstances surrounding the event.
