Guardians Rookie's Seventh-Inning Error Gifts Rangers Go-Ahead Run in Close Matchup

Cleveland Guardians left fielder Cooper Ingle experienced a moment of confusion during Tuesday night's game against the Texas Rangers, resulting in a crucial miscue he will undoubtedly aim to quickly put behind him.

The score was deadlocked at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Rangers had a runner positioned on second base with just one out when Texas batter Alejandro Osuna hit a routine pop fly into left field. Ingle cleanly made the catch, securing what was, at that point, the second out of the inning.

Rookie's Costly Misjudgment

In a lapse of concentration, Ingle appeared to believe the catch signified the third out and the end of the inning. He proceeded to throw the live ball into the stands at Progressive Field. This momentary error in judgment allowed Rangers runner Ezequiel Duran to advance unchallenged from second base and score, providing Texas with the go-ahead run.

The Rangers ultimately secured a 4-2 victory over the Guardians. At the plate, Ingle went 0-for-4, recording three strikeouts in the contest.

Ingle Reflects on Embarrassing Play

The 24-year-old outfielder had only made his major league debut a few days prior, on Friday, against the Seattle Mariners. Ingle entered the 2026 season with significant anticipation, ranking as the 99th overall prospect on MLB’s list of the top 100 in baseball and 65th on Baseball Prospectus’ list. He was also recognized as the third-highest prospect within the Guardians organization.

Following the game, Ingle took full responsibility for the error and expressed his determination to prevent a recurrence.

"Obviously you feel terrible," he told reporters. "It's a pretty embarrassing feeling."

With Tuesday’s outcome, both the Guardians and the Rangers now hold identical 44-42 records for the season.
