Representative Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, has secured her party's nomination in Tuesday's primary election, positioning her to seek a fifth term representing the state's 5th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The incumbent congresswoman, who was born in Somalia, faced four less prominent contenders for the Democratic nomination. These included Julie Trang Le, a former federal immigration prosecutor; Abena McKenzie, a nurse who had previously challenged Omar in the 2024 primary, where she garnered less than half a percent of the vote; Latonya Reeves, a Democratic National Committee member and long-standing activist running from a more centrist position; and Nate Schluter, a political newcomer with a minimal presence in the race.
Despite the field of challengers, none were considered a serious threat to Omar. She has firmly established her role in Congress by appealing to the increasingly progressive electorate within her district, which is notable for hosting the largest concentration of Somali Americans nationwide.
Omar's Enduring Influence and District Profile
The 5th District encompasses Minneapolis and several adjacent suburbs, standing as one of Minnesota's most reliably Democratic congressional areas. Representative Omar has held this seat since 2019, making history as one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress and the first Somali American to serve in the House.
A former refugee and a founding member of the group known informally as the "Squad," Omar has emerged as one of the Democratic Party's most visible progressive figures. Her viewpoints on topics such as immigration, healthcare policy, and the United States' approach to Israel have frequently drawn national attention.

The Republican field included Dalia Al-Aqidi, a former journalist born in Iraq with pro-Israel views, who was considered the frontrunner; John Nagel, a retired lieutenant with the Minnesota State Patrol; and long-shot political outsiders Angie Windhauser and Abbey Zieska.
The 5th Congressional District has a long history of electing Democratic representatives, spanning several decades. This consistent trend often leads to the Democratic primary race garnering more significant attention than the general election in this particular district.
Independent analysis from the Cook Political Report categorizes the race in Minnesota's 5th District as "solid Democrat," assigning it a +32 rating. This assessment indicates a very low probability of the district shifting its political alignment to Republican in the upcoming election.
