Senator Kennedy Proposes Ban on Naming Public Buildings After Living Politicians Amid Former President Trump's Renaming Efforts

Senator John Kennedy, a Republican representing Louisiana, recently asserted that public buildings should not bear the names of living public officials. He advocated for the establishment of a rule to prevent such naming conventions, particularly while individuals are still alive.

This stance comes amidst various reports detailing former President Donald Trump's efforts to rename federal facilities in Washington, D.C., and other locations after himself. Senator Kennedy emphasized that public officials, including the former president, should refrain from “spending public money on private ads for themselves.”

Ethical Concerns Over Public Funding

During an appearance on a national broadcast, Senator Kennedy conveyed his perspective, stating, “The White House sees it differently, but … you can’t spend public money to … promote yourself.” His comments coincided with reports of a federally funded advertisement promoting former President Trump appearing on several networks.

The Louisiana senator then formally suggested that public figures should be barred from having structures named in their honor during their lifetime. “I may end up with a sombrero on my head, but I also think we ought to have a rule that no politician can have a building named after him when he’s alive,” Kennedy remarked. This comment was an allusion to instances last year where former President Trump reportedly shared AI-generated videos depicting Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) wearing sombreros.

Former President Trump's Renaming Initiatives

Throughout and following his presidency, former President Trump has pursued various initiatives to affix his name to prominent federal sites. One notable target has been the Kennedy Center. Although a board, initially appointed by Trump, attempted to add his name to the building, federal judges intervened to block these efforts. For a brief period, Trump's name was displayed on the center's facade, but it was subsequently removed after court rulings affirmed that only Congress possesses the authority to alter the center’s official designation.

Similarly, the State Department reportedly added Trump’s name to the U.S. Institute of Peace last year. However, former institute officials, who had been removed during the Trump administration, recently filed a court motion seeking to prevent construction crews from affixing the former president’s name to the building's exterior.

Further proposals from former President Trump included suggesting that New York’s Penn Station and the Washington D.C. area’s Dulles Airport be named after him. These suggestions were reportedly presented as conditions for a funding agreement earlier this year.

Additionally, the former president has publicly discussed a project to construct a promenade connecting the rear of the Lincoln Memorial to the Potomac River. He noted that his allies expressed a desire to name this proposed pathway the “Trump Promenade.” Reflecting on the idea, he stated at the time, “They want to call it the Trump Promenade, but I don’t know if I want to do that, but it’s going to be beautiful.”
