Senator Marsha Blackburn Secures Republican Nomination for Tennessee Governor
U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn won the GOP primary for Tennessee governor, positioning her as a strong contender to succeed term-limited Governor Bill Lee.
Politics·

U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn, a Republican representing Tennessee, achieved a decisive victory in the GOP primary on Thursday evening. This win sets her on a path to potentially become the next governor of the Volunteer State, a position that has not been held by a Democrat since 2006.
Blackburn aims to succeed current Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, who is term-limited and cannot seek re-election. Governor Lee has held the office since 2019, securing his last re-election with a significant margin of 64.9% against Democratic challenger Jason Martin, a businessman and physician, who received 32.9% of the vote.
Blackburn's Policy Stances and Campaign Focus
Throughout her campaign, Blackburn emphasized issues central to the Republican platform at both the state and national levels. Immigration was a key focus, with the senator outlining stringent policies.
As governor, I’ll deport illegals, stop the flow of drugs and drug money. We will crack down on Cartels, restrict cash transfers to drug havens and hit criminals and illegals where it hurts — in their wallets.
Blackburn stated in a campaign video.
Another prominent issue for Blackburn was the prevention of Chinese entities from acquiring land within Tennessee. She underscored this commitment with a widely circulated campaign advertisement featuring her crushing a fortune cookie.
It doesn’t take a fortune cookie to figure it out. Here in Tennessee we’re going to stop communist China and protect Tennessee land.
she declared.
The Republican Primary Field
Despite the competitive nature of the primary, neither Governor Bill Lee nor former President Donald Trump issued an official endorsement in the three-way Republican contest. Governor Lee, while not endorsing, acknowledged his long-standing friendship with Blackburn when she announced her candidacy.
I’ve been friends with Marsha for a long time, and she served as my congressman and representative in the General Assembly. I’m proud we have really good people running for governor in this state.
Lee told local media outlets. Former President Trump also maintained neutrality, citing his connections to one of Blackburn’s primary opponents, Representative John Rose.
Representative John Rose, an 8th-generation farmer and the founder of Transcender Corp., an IT certification company, has represented Tennessee in the legislature since 2019. His gubernatorial campaign positioned him as a local candidate dedicated to addressing local challenges with local solutions.
I know that anything is achievable in Tennessee because I have lived it. Now, I’m asking for you to give me the chance to bring opportunity to all Tennesseans.
Rose stated in his campaign materials. His platform highlighted five core areas: education, infrastructure, healthcare, energy, and economic and community development.
The third candidate in the primary was State Representative Monty Fritts, who advocated for a more assertive, limited-government agenda. Fritts’s primary objective was to reduce the financial burden on citizens.
My number one priority is leaving more money in your pockets, in your purses and in your country bankrolls rather than sending it to Nashville.
Fritts explained in a campaign video. His website outlined positions such as decreasing Tennessee’s state budget, safeguarding individual rights from governmental overreach, and enhancing parental involvement in education.
Earlier this year, Fritts garnered controversy for comments made during his campaign, specifically his call for a ban on mosques and other “pagan religions.”
Islam is a little different story than perhaps other religions are, in that it’s not necessarily a religion; it’s a political movement. It’s that movement that, if you don’t submit, perhaps you are executed. I feel that Islam is incongruent with both our U.S. and Tennessee Constitution.
Fritts told local news organizations.
Looking Ahead to the General Election
Having secured the Republican nomination, Senator Blackburn will now advance to the general election on November 3. She is set to face Democratic challenger Jerri Green, who serves as a Memphis City Councilwoman and Chief Public Defender.
