Mookie Betts Expresses Desire to Focus on Baseball, Not Politics, Despite Public Scrutiny

Los Angeles Dodgers standout Mookie Betts has articulated his desire to be recognized primarily as a baseball player, rather than a political personality or a platform for various agendas.

Prioritizing Family Over Political Engagements

Betts, 33, who is a four-time World Series champion, attended the White House celebration following the Dodgers' 2024 World Series victory. However, he will not be participating in this year's visit. He explained that his choice stems from the recent birth of his child, expressing a wish to dedicate time to his family, and explicitly stated the decision was not influenced by political considerations.

The Role of Athletes in Society

The American League MVP winner raised a question about the contemporary tendency to perceive athletes as political figures.

"I'm sure there are some guys in there that love politics and want to be in it, but I'm not sure why the world sees us that way. But it kind of is what it is."

The eight-time All-Star commented on the challenging situation athletes encounter regarding White House invitations, noting that any decision made is likely to draw criticism from some segment of the public. Recognizing that negative reactions are almost inevitable regardless of his choice, Betts opted to prioritize what he felt was most beneficial for himself and his family.

"So instead of trying to make other people happy, it's let me just make myself happy, you know, make myself happy and get to spend some time with my family. Like I said, I got a new baby, so get to spend some time with her." Betts further elaborated, "I don't really worry about it too much. Like I said, my stance is really that if I'm going to make everybody mad, make somebody mad, then at least I'm gonna make myself happy. So, that's where I'm at."

Currently in his 13th professional season, Betts has experienced a more challenging performance this year compared to his established career statistics. The Nashville native boasts a career batting average of .288, alongside 302 home runs and 944 runs batted in. However, his current season statistics show a batting average of .235, with 11 home runs and 31 RBIs.

The six-time Gold Glove recipient aims to improve his performance in the latter half of the season, contributing to the Dodgers' pursuit of a third consecutive World Series championship.
