The National Football League is currently examining an incident that occurred during Sunday's game between the Arizona Cardinals and the New York Giants, where a game official reportedly used strong language directed at Cardinals tight end Trey McBride.
A league spokesperson confirmed that the matter is under investigation. The exchange gained significant attention after being broadcast on television and subsequently highlighted on social media by JC Tretter, the executive director of the NFL Players Association.
Line judge Jeff Seeman, whose father Jerry Seeman previously served as an NFL supervisor of officials, was observed on camera appearing to utter an expletive toward McBride along the Cardinals' sideline. Accounts suggest Seeman repeated the offensive term consecutively.
Union Demands Accountability
"This kind of behavior from an official towards a player is unacceptable," Tretter stated in a social media post following the game. He further emphasized the need for consistent standards, noting, "Players are consistently held accountable when the roles are reversed. We expect the NFL to hold officials to the same standard."
Context and Expected Conduct
While the precise catalyst for the official's remarks remains unconfirmed, there have been unverified reports suggesting McBride may have verbally challenged officials regarding a call. However, the specific words attributed to McBride have not been clarified. Regardless of any player's comments, the established protocol for game officials when confronted with player misconduct is to issue a penalty flag, rather than responding with verbal abuse.
