The Kansas City Royals experienced a significant defensive collapse during a recent game against the New York Mets, transforming a seemingly ordinary ground ball into one of the most peculiar scoring sequences observed this Major League Baseball season.
In a moment of disarray, Mets outfielder Carson Benge hit a slow chopper back towards the pitching mound. What followed was a series of unfortunate events for the Royals, as three distinct errors on the same play allowed Benge to circumnavigate the bases and score, granting New York an unexpected early three-run advantage.
Defensive Breakdown Leads to Unearned Runs
The sequence began when Royals pitcher Seth Lugo fielded Benge's ground ball. Lugo's off-balance throw to first base veered wide of first baseman Jac Caglianone, marking the first error of the play and enabling Benge to reach first safely.
As Benge advanced, Caglianone retrieved the errant ball and attempted to throw him out at third. However, this throw also sailed past the bag and into foul territory, constituting the second error. With the ball loose, Benge quickly rounded second and began heading for third, then home.
The defensive woes continued as third baseman Nick Loftin's subsequent relay throw also went astray, becoming the third error on the play. This final miscue cleared Benge's path, allowing him to complete his journey around the bases and score a "Little League home run," a term often used for such an unconventional scoring play.
This remarkable series of defensive blunders meant the Kansas City squad conceded three unearned runs to the Mets before recording the third out of the inning, effectively handing their opponents an early 3-0 lead without a single earned run.
Despite the early deficit stemming from these costly errors, the Royals managed to rally later in the game. By the fifth inning, they had fought back to tie the score at 9-9, demonstrating resilience after the initial defensive struggles.
