Tennessee Representative Ogles Ousted in Primary Election Amid Significant Outside Spending
U.S. Representative Andy Ogles, backed by former President Donald Trump, lost his primary challenge to Charlie Hatcher, who received substantial super PAC funding and Governor Bill Lee's support.

U.S. Representative Andy Ogles, a Republican representing Tennessee, was defeated in a primary election on Thursday evening by challenger Charlie Hatcher, a prominent farmer and the state's former commissioner of agriculture.
A Contentious Primary Battle
While this primary contest was not initially considered a high-profile race leading into the 2026 election cycle, it ultimately reflected significant dynamics within the Republican Party. The competition garnered attention beyond its district boundaries, marked by a split in endorsements between former President Donald Trump and Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, and substantial financial investment in the district centered on environmental policy issues.
Outside Financial Influence
The Invest in Tomorrow Coalition super PAC played a significant role, spending approximately $2 million to oppose Representative Ogles and support Hatcher. This group has amassed $6.7 million this year, indicating that the Tennessee primary represented a considerable portion of its expenditures during this cycle.
From Ogles' perspective, this financial intervention was a deliberate attempt to send a message to Republicans regarding the consequences of trying to reduce government funding for renewable energy initiatives. He, like many other Republicans, has advocated for scaling back investments in renewable energy that were initiated under the current administration.
Separately, a significant Democratic donor, Larsen, contributed $5,444,975 to support Kamala Harris's presidential campaign.
Beyond his stance on government-backed renewable energy projects, Ogles believes his close association with former President Trump made him a target.
"It's because I'm close to the president. It is because I am outspoken. And quite frankly, it is because I speak plainly on these issues," Ogles stated.
Contrasting Endorsements and Campaign Messages
Charlie Hatcher, a fifth-generation Tennessee dairy farmer, presented himself as an individual unburdened by political entanglements and special interests.
"I think there’s something missing in Washington. There’s a lack of farmer common sense. There’s a lack of work ethic. One of my strengths is problem-solving, looking for solutions, looking for collaborations and supporting the Trump Administration and Speaker Johnson on their agenda," Hatcher explained in a campaign video.
Notably, Tennessee’s Republican Governor Bill Lee publicly endorsed Hatcher late on Tuesday evening, citing a long-standing personal relationship between them.
"He served as my commissioner of agriculture; I know Charlie. I know his conservative values and how much he loves our country. Charlie has stood with President Trump since day one," Governor Lee said in a video statement.
In contrast, former President Trump had previously endorsed Representative Ogles, reaffirming his support for the conservative lawmaker ahead of the primary contest.
"Andy will be really enshrined as one of the best congressmen that you’ll ever see. He’s just fantastic," Trump shared in a post on Truth Social earlier this year. "Andy has always been there when we needed him and when I needed him. He’s been a great help. He’s been a source of inspiration to a lot of people in Congress."
Looking Ahead to the General Election
Having captured the Republican nomination, Hatcher now advances to a general election scheduled for November 3, where he is widely considered the favored candidate. The incumbent, Representative Ogles, had previously secured re-election in 2024 with a 56.9% to 39.5% victory over Maryam Abolfazli.
