During a recent public appearance in New York City, former talk show host Wendy Williams offered a succinct message to cameras. The 62-year-old was observed walking through the city on Wednesday, marking her first known public outing since February.
In a video captured during the sighting, Williams was asked what she wished to convey to her fans about her current circumstances. Her direct response was a three-word plea:
I want out!
Williams appeared in a casual outfit, consisting of a black T-shirt, high-waisted denim shorts, and black boots, accessorized with a red handbag. She was seen conversing with a male companion as they navigated the city streets.
Public Appearance Amidst Guardianship
This pointed statement arises amid years of public inquiry into Williams’ health, personal life, and her court-appointed guardianship. Williams was placed under this guardianship in 2022, the same year her long-running daytime talk show, which aired for 13 seasons, was canceled. She has largely remained out of the public eye since then.
In February 2024, Williams' representatives disclosed that she had received a diagnosis of primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) in 2023. This announcement followed years of public speculation regarding shifts in her behavior and speech patterns.
Over the past few years, questions have been raised at times about Wendy's ability to process information, and many have speculated about Wendy's condition, particularly when she began to lose words, act erratically at times and have difficulty understanding financial transactions,
her team stated at the time. They further elaborated on the diagnosis:
In 2023, after undergoing a battery of medical tests, Wendy was officially diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Aphasia, a condition affecting language and communication abilities, and frontotemporal dementia, a progressive disorder impacting behavior and cognitive functions, have already presented significant hurdles in Wendy's life.
Disputed Diagnosis and Attorney's Perspective
Despite the public announcement by her team, Williams herself has publicly challenged the assertion that she has dementia. Her attorney, Joe Tacopina, further elaborated on this denial in December 2025, stating that Williams underwent an evaluation by New York City neurologist Dr. Samuel E. Gandy, who concluded she "does not have frontotemporal dementia."
Tacopina has also suggested that alcohol addiction might have contributed to Williams' health challenges. During a segment on "Nightline," he remarked,
There’s something called alcohol-induced dementia. That may have been something Wendy was suffering from back in [2023], 24. She was an alcoholic, no question about it. Wendy was drunk almost 24 hours a day. She looked like she needed help. She did need help. She needed alcohol rehabilitation.
Williams' past struggles with alcohol addiction were previously explored in the Lifetime documentary series "Where Is Wendy Williams?," which chronicled her life away from television.
Following the disclosure of her diagnosis in 2024, Williams extended her gratitude to her supporters who had rallied behind her.
