Paul Pelosi Receives Six-Month Driving Prohibition Following Hit-and-Run Plea

Paul Pelosi has been prohibited from operating a vehicle for six months following an incident in which he struck a parked car and left the scene in California's wine country. This marks his return to court four years after a previous conviction for driving under the influence (DUI).

Authorities reported that Pelosi, 86, collided with an unoccupied parked vehicle in Yountville on July 3 and subsequently departed the location, as confirmed by Napa County District Attorney Allison Haley on Tuesday.

The husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat representing California, entered a plea of no contest to a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge and also to a traffic infraction for an illegal turn.

Court Proceedings and Penalties

Napa County Superior Court Judge Scott R.L. Young imposed a one-year probation period on Pelosi and issued a six-month driving prohibition. This driving ban represents the maximum duration permissible under the specific provisions of the California Vehicle Code cited by the prosecution in this case.

Furthermore, Judge Young mandated that Pelosi complete a 10-day work program. He was also instructed to report to the Napa County Department of Corrections solely for booking purposes by November 20.

As part of the plea agreement, Pelosi remitted $11,191.14 in restitution to the owner of the damaged vehicle, according to information from the district attorney's office. He was also ordered to cover various court fines and fees.

Law enforcement officers located Pelosi approximately half a mile from the collision site. He reportedly informed the officers that he had intended to return to the scene of the accident.

Prior Driving Incidents and Legal History

This is not Pelosi's first encounter with criminal charges stemming from a crash in Napa County. In 2022, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor DUI offense following a separate incident.

That prior conviction carried requirements including participation in a DUI education program and the installation of an ignition interlock device in his vehicle. He was also sentenced to and ordered to pay restitution and fines in connection with that case.

His driving history also includes a fatal collision in 1957 in San Mateo County, which resulted in the death of his 19-year-old brother, as reported by The New York Times. Pelosi was driving at the time, but a jury subsequently cleared him of any wrongdoing in that incident.

Broader Driving Record and Public Scrutiny

More recently, Pelosi has accumulated a number of traffic infractions across four counties in the Bay Area, according to the Times. These reported violations occurred in Napa, San Mateo, Marin, and San Francisco and included offenses such as speeding, running a red light, driving against traffic on a one-way street, and using a cellphone without a hands-free device.

Prosecutors indicated that the significant public attention surrounding Pelosi's case prompted the official announcement of the charges and resolution. They noted that misdemeanor hit-and-run cases involving solely property damage typically do not result in a public news release from their office.
