Recently released 911 recordings offer fresh insight into the deadly shooting that occurred at Seattle’s renowned Bite of Seattle festival, documenting the urgent efforts of emergency personnel amid reports of numerous casualties.
One individual, who stated they had been shot in the back, told a dispatcher, "I’m losing blood." The caller was unable to identify the shooter.
"I don’t know who did it. I took cover. I see the officers down here," the caller explained. The dispatcher worked to keep the wounded person calm, directing help to the area near a water fountain where the caller was believed to be waiting. "It’s OK. Just breathe. Breathe with me. I’m going to stay with you," the dispatcher reassured. Moments later, the caller confirmed being with an officer.
Disturbing Emergency Calls Emerge
Other emergency transmissions captured dispatchers and first responders scrambling to assess the scale of the unfolding violence near the Seattle Center Armory. When asked if anyone had been shot, one dispatcher confirmed, "Multiple people down at this point."
As additional reports streamed in, another dispatcher requested "as many aid units as possible," indicating at least two people were down, "but more than that." Emergency crews initially treated the area as an active scene as officials worked to confirm it was safe for responders to enter. "Let’s treat that as an active scene for now," a dispatcher instructed.
Amidst the chaotic response, a dispatcher later confirmed "six confirmed gunshot wounds."
Investigation Progress and Challenges
These calls come as Seattle police have provided limited public updates on the ongoing investigation. Interim Police Chief Andre Sayles indicated earlier this month that new information had emerged in the investigation, and an arrest was anticipated, though he refrained from sharing specifics. "I think the biggest thing is, you know, it’s going to cause a little bit of frustration, is the integrity of this investigation," Sayles stated on August 7. "There’s some information that we have. I want to make sure that we keep the integrity of that investigation close to the vest until we can make the appropriate arrest."
A 15-year-old suspect remains in custody in connection with the shooting.
Tragic Details of the Incident
The shooting erupted last month outside the Seattle Center Armory during the Bite of Seattle food festival, located near the iconic Space Needle. Authorities previously confirmed that three people died, and four others sustained injuries, including a 2-year-old boy.
Among the deceased were a 19-year-old man and a 44-year-old man, both pronounced dead at the scene. A 56-year-old woman later succumbed to her injuries after being transported to a hospital in critical condition.

Mayor Bruce Harrell described the shooting as "an act of horrific violence."

Harrell stated that officials believed a 15-year-old had opened fire into the crowd, although further details remained under investigation. The teenager was booked into juvenile detention on suspicion of gun violations and first-degree assault. As of the most recent updates, no homicide charges had been filed.
Former Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes noted that investigators believed gunfire was exchanged outside the Armory following a conflict between small groups thought to be adversaries, leaving bystanders caught in the crossfire. Investigators initially theorized that two gunmen were involved. However, a juvenile court document later suggested that the detained teenager and an acquaintance found dead at the scene might have exchanged gunfire with at least one other unidentified suspect.
