WNBA Finals See Angel Reese's 'Protect Black Women' Statement, Anthem Stances, and Scheduling Hurdles
The ongoing WNBA Finals have been characterized by player statements, national anthem protocols, and logistical challenges, adding layers of discussion beyond on-court action.

Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese made a notable statement upon her arrival at the Chase Center for Game 5 of the WNBA Finals against the Golden State Valkyries. Her T-shirt prominently displayed the phrase, "Protect Black women."
The specific context or intent behind the message was not immediately clear, leaving open whether it referred to a particular incident or served as a broader declaration. Reese, known for her willingness to express her views on social issues, has previously voiced opinions that resonate with various segments of the public.
Reese, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, has delivered strong performances throughout the series and was expected to bring a focused intensity to the crucial matchup against the Valkyries.
Public Discourse and Player Statements
The shirt quickly garnered attention from WNBA fans, prompting discussions about potential reactions if a White WNBA player were to wear a shirt with a similar sentiment, such as "Protect White women." Many observers noted that such a message would likely provoke significant controversy. This follows a previous instance earlier in the season when Sophie Cunningham generated considerable discussion by wearing a shirt that simply stated, "Protect women’s sports."
The broader theme of the messages athletes convey to their audience has become a point of contention, even within the context of the WNBA Finals. While some might suggest a more encompassing message like "Protect women," the debate itself highlights varying perspectives on public expression in sports.
National Anthem Protocols
Further contributing to the off-court narratives surrounding the WNBA Finals are the pre-game routines of the two competing teams. Both the Atlanta Dream and the Golden State Valkyries have chosen not to remain on the court during the national anthem.
Atlanta Dream star Rhyne Howard recently addressed her team's practice, stating,
"I don’t think I’ve been on the floor for the national anthem for any of my tenure in Atlanta, so if that’s what people are gonna look to nitpick for then so be it. But as far as competing for your team, when I go put on a USA jersey I’m out for the national anthem every time, there’s no doubt about it."
She further clarified her position, adding,
"Yes, I love the country that I play for and I love what we have here."
Golden State head coach Natalie Nakase also commented on her team's approach, explaining that departing the floor during the anthem has been a consistent part of the franchise's pregame ritual since the Valkyries joined the WNBA.
Unusual Scheduling for Game 6
Beyond player statements and pre-game protocols, an unexpected scheduling challenge added another layer of peculiarity to the series. Prior to Monday, the league faced a significant conflict regarding the venue for a potential Game 6, which was initially slated to return to State Farm Arena.
Instead of relocating the game to an alternative facility, the league opted to adjust the tip-off time for the potential series-clinching contest to 12:30 p.m. ET. This earlier start time means that Valkyries fans, particularly those on the West Coast, would need to make early arrangements, potentially rescheduling work commitments, to watch the pivotal game.
These various off-court developments have collectively imbued the WNBA Finals with a distinctive atmosphere, even as the league experiences what could be its most high-profile championship series to date.
