Actor Andrew Garfield recently faced scrutiny on social media following remarks he made about billionaires while discussing his upcoming film, "The Uprising," at a special screening in Los Angeles.
During a question-and-answer session with director Paul Greengrass, captured in a video by The Movie Report, Garfield elaborated on the historical action drama. "The Uprising" chronicles England's 1381 Peasants' Revolt, an event set in the wake of the Black Death. The narrative focuses on how King Richard II's court imposed severe taxes to fund the Hundred Years' War, pushing the common populace to their breaking point.
An audience member inquired about Garfield's aspirations for viewers after watching the film, asking, "What are you hoping for?"
Garfield responded, "Well, first I hope they come and see it, first thing. Secondly, I hope it's galvanizing. I hope there's some awakening that people feel … that we all feel like our own struggles are being reflected in the struggles of these characters from a distant time and place and that it could be directive."
He then added a provocative comment: "And I hope that if any billionaires watch it, they're scared sh--less."
Public Reaction and Actor's Wealth
These comments quickly ignited criticism across social media platforms, with many commentators highlighting the significant financial success Garfield has achieved throughout his acting career.
When I first heard they were making a period film about Wat Tyler, I was pretty excited. But the more Andrew Garfield talks, the more it sounds like it's just going to be socialist garbage.
Rick Davis, an associate pastor at Providence Church in Lynchburg, Virginia, expressed this disappointment. (In the film, Garfield portrays a fictional central character named Ploughman, while actor Cosmo Jarvis takes on the role of the historical rebel leader Wat Tyler.)
Spencer Pratt, a former candidate for mayor in Los Angeles, pointed out what he perceived as irony in Garfield's remarks. "You mean…like the billionaires who greenlight your movies and stroke all your multi-million dollar paychecks? Or they good?" Pratt wrote. He further noted the actor's recent earnings: "Ironically, Garfield just got paid like $5M for playing billionaire Sam Altman in Artificial."
Columnist John William Sherrod shared his perspective, posting, "Hilarious that world-famous, multi, multi millionaire Andrew Garfield is cosplaying as a put upon member of the working class."
Noam Blum, chief technology officer at Tablet Magazine, also weighed in, observing, "More billionaires were involved in making this than will probably ever watch it."
Garfield's Prominent Film Career
Garfield has an extensive filmography, including leading roles in major productions. His notable credits include "Spider-Man: No Way Home," the critically acclaimed "Hacksaw Ridge," and "The Amazing Spider-Man" series.
