Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy indicated on Sunday that the Trump administration is preparing to announce a significant initiative targeting fraud.
In a social media post, Duffy stated that an "unprecedented fraud crackdown" would be revealed. He wrote, "TOMORROW: UNPRECEDENTED FRAUD CRACKDOWN."
Duffy's post also included tags for Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Department of Justice (DOJ), and the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud. These tags suggest a coordinated effort spanning multiple federal departments to address various forms of fraudulent activity.
While teasing the announcement, Secretary Duffy did not provide further details regarding its exact timing, location, the specific types of fraud it would address, or whether any arrests had already been made in connection with the initiative.
Broader Administration Efforts Against Fraud
This upcoming announcement aligns with the administration's ongoing broader campaign against fraud. In March, the White House established the Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, specifically designed to synchronize federal efforts related to benefit programs.
Complementing this, the Department of Justice has also formed a National Fraud Enforcement Division, tasked with investigating and prosecuting the theft or fraudulent misuse of taxpayer funds.
Focus on Commercial Trucking Industry
In recent months, Secretary Duffy's Department of Transportation (DOT) has collaborated closely with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to combat alleged fraud and safety violations within the commercial trucking sector. This joint focus has included issues such as improperly issued commercial driver’s licenses, the operation of fraudulent driving schools, and concerns regarding unvetted foreign drivers.
As part of these efforts, the two agencies announced a joint investigation in July. This probe targeted approximately 75 commercial driving schools suspected of engaging in fraudulent practices, including allegations of falsifying training records and improperly certifying drivers for commercial licenses.
Additionally, the DOT and DHS have conducted roadside enforcement operations, specifically aimed at identifying and addressing unqualified foreign commercial drivers operating within the United States.
