U.S. Intelligence Warns of Heightened Iranian Threat to Personnel Abroad
A recent intelligence assessment reveals a significant uptick in Iranian activities aimed at U.S. citizens and officials in the Middle East and other regions.

A recent intelligence memorandum has alerted top U.S. officials to a significant escalation in Iran's efforts to target American personnel globally. The unclassified memo, dispatched last Friday by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, underscores growing concerns about the safety of U.S. citizens abroad.
The release of this assessment follows closely on the heels of a State Department directive issued days prior, ordering non-emergency U.S. government employees and their family members to depart Saudi Arabia. This measure was enacted amidst intensifying attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in the region.
Escalating Threats Against U.S. Personnel
U.S. officials have verified the authenticity of the intelligence document. According to the memo, "Specifically, through various channels, we have received intelligence that Iran has substantially increased efforts to target U.S. personnel."
The document further elaborates on the gravity of the situation, stating, "The lethal plotting efforts by the Iranians against U.S. citizens have reached advanced stages in both the Middle East and certain other countries."
In response to these heightened threats, intelligence officials are reportedly working to declassify specific intelligence details. The aim is to facilitate broader dissemination and sharing of this critical information with State Department personnel, enabling them to better address the evolving security landscape.
"When it comes to our staffing at embassies, we constantly evaluate new information about the security environment," an official stated. "The threat of Houthi attacks and of Iranian terror plots targeting U.S. officials are informing our decisions on staffing adjustments for embassies on RO Status in the region."
Diplomatic Responses and Regional Tensions
The intelligence report detailing Iranian activities against U.S. diplomats and officials in the Middle East emerges as President Donald Trump continues to consider potential military responses against Iran. These considerations are contingent upon Tehran's willingness to reach an agreement with Washington.
Earlier in the week, the State Department addressed initial reports suggesting a wider directive for nonessential government personnel and their dependents to leave the entire Gulf region. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott clarified that the departure order was specifically limited to Saudi Arabia.
Pigott emphasized that any assertions of a potential broader regional shutdown were "inaccurate," confirming the U.S. Department of State "issued an ordered departure for non-emergency U.S. government employees and their family members in Saudi Arabia."
The U.S. government had previously reissued a warning to Americans traveling in and through the Middle East in late September, advising caution due to regional instability. The most recent security alert and subsequent personnel adjustments coincide with a series of missile attacks launched by Iran-backed Houthi rebels targeting Saudi Arabia.
